In 2024, Matatoa Consultants had the distinct privilege of partnering with Z Energy on a national pilot project. This initiative represented more than just a project; it was a transformative journey of respect, recognition, and cultural collaboration. Tasked with renaming key retail sites and creating plaques of acknowledgment for those who contributed to the initiative, we were committed to ensuring this work was meaningful, authentic, and deeply connected to the communities it served.

Central to this effort was the building of genuine, enduring relationships with local iwi and hapū across Aotearoa. From the beginning, we recognised that these relationships were fundamental to the project's success. We worked closely with these communities, not as mere stakeholders, but as respected partners whose voices and wisdom shaped every stage of the process. It was vital to us that the renaming of these sites was not just a symbolic gesture, but an act of recognition that honoured the history, identity, and mana of the land and its people.

This collaboration provided an incredible opportunity for all involved—Z Energy, Matatoa Consultants, and the wider communities—to gain a deeper appreciation of Aotearoa’s cultural heritage. The richness of Māori history and tradition was woven throughout the project, offering us all the chance to learn, grow, and reflect. By engaging closely with iwi and hapū, we gained valuable insights into the importance of place, history, and identity. This project became not just a corporate initiative but a profound cultural journey that reshaped our understanding of how business can, and should, honour the communities it serves.
